Business Innovation and Investment visas – 188 and 888
Business migration is a complex process, and even assessing whether you have a good chance of qualifying can be difficult. Getting the right immigration advice early is critical.
Subclass 188 – Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional)
The 188 was a provisional visa for business owners and investors, with streams including Business Innovation, Investor, Significant Investor, Premium Investor and Entrepreneur. Most streams required a state or territory nomination. It closed to new applications on 31 July 2024, but many people still hold this visa.
Subclass 888 – Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent)
The 888 is the permanent stage for subclass 188 holders. You must have established and operated business activity in Australia or maintained your designated investment, and meet the requirements of your specific stream. If you hold a 188 visa, Auscan can assess your readiness and prepare your 888 application.
Subclass 132 – Business Talent (Migrant)
The 132 was a direct permanent visa for people with a successful business career or venture capital funding in Australia, with no provisional stage. It also closed to new applications on 31 July 2024.

Business visa FAQs
Can I still apply for the Australian business visa subclass 188?
No. The Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) – including the subclass 188 provisional visa and the subclass 132 Business Talent visa – closed to new applications on 31 July 2024. Existing 188 visa holders can still apply for the permanent subclass 888 visa if they meet the requirements of their stream.
What is the subclass 888 business visa?
The Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa subclass 888 is the permanent residency stage for people who hold a subclass 188 visa. You must have established and operated a business in Australia, or maintained your designated investment, and meet the requirements of your specific 188 stream.
What are the business migration options for entrepreneurs and investors now?
Exceptionally talented business people may consider the National Innovation visa (subclass 858), a permanent visa that requires an expression of interest and an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement. Other pathways include employer-sponsored or skilled visas, depending on your profile. Auscan assesses which option suits you.
Can I visit Australia for business meetings?
Yes. The Business Visitor stream of the Visitor visa (subclass 600) lets you visit Australia for business meetings, conferences, negotiations or to explore business opportunities, usually for up to 3 months per visit. You must apply from outside Australia and cannot work or sell goods or services to the public. See our visitor visa page.
Do business and investor visas need state nomination?
Most former business and investor visas (subclass 188 and 132) required nomination by an Australian state or territory government. The National Innovation visa uses an expression of interest instead. We help you understand the requirements for your situation.
