IELTS or PTE – which English test should you take?
IELTS
International English Language Testing System. Four skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking – scored in bands from 0 to 9. Available as IELTS Academic (for study) and IELTS General Training (for migration and work), on paper or computer. The speaking test is face to face with an examiner.
PTE Academic
Pearson Test of English Academic. A fully computer-based test with AI scoring from 10 to 90, taking about 2 hours. Results usually arrive in around 2 days. Accepted for Australian visas and by universities worldwide.
TOEFL iBT
An internet-based test of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, scored out of 120. Accepted by many universities; check visa acceptance before you book.

PTE Academic and PTE General explained
PTE, the Pearson Test of English, assesses the English language ability of non-native English speakers. The main versions are PTE Academic, PTE General (now called the Pearson English International Certificate) and PTE Young Learners.
PTE Academic test format
The test takes about 2 hours in three parts:
- Speaking & Writing – personal introduction, read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, retell lecture, answer short questions, plus summarize written text and essay writing. In 2025 Pearson added new tasks such as Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion.
- Reading – reading & writing fill in the blanks, multiple-choice questions, re-order paragraphs and fill in the blanks.
- Listening – summarize spoken text, multiple-choice, fill in the missing words, highlight correct summary, select missing word, highlight incorrect words and write from dictation.
PTE General (Pearson English International Certificate)
PTE General is divided into levels aligned to the CEFR – A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Higher levels are recognised by various universities in the UK and by many universities and companies worldwide. The test uses real-life tasks and evaluates how well you understand presentations, grasp core concepts and write messages.

What PTE score is equal to IELTS 6?
As an indicative guide, IELTS 6 is roughly equal to PTE Academic 51–58 and TOEFL iBT 79. For Australian visas, the Department of Home Affairs publishes its own official score equivalences, which were updated in August 2025 – always check the current table or ask us.
Which is easier, IELTS or PTE?
Neither is “easier” for everyone. PTE Academic is fully computer-based and scored by AI, with results usually in about 2 days – many students like its speed.
